Duncan Beaver started his journey as a luthier by teaching Orchestra at public schools in both Wichita Falls and Dallas. Beaver found himself gluing seams, setting soundposts and fitting bridges for students before joining Jay Rury Violins. He began working at Rury in 1990 and remained there until the shop’s closing in 2019, when he began working at Caraway Strings.
Beaver enjoys identifying older violins and diagnosing issues, also helping pick out quality instruments and bows for the Caraway Strings showroom.
Beaver was a member of the Wichita Falls Symphony from 1968-1982 and was the concertmaster at the Mesquite Symphony orchestra in their opening year in 1986.
Trevor McIntosh graduated from Southwestern University in 2019 with a degree in Music Theory and Composition. He is currently a violist at both the Mesquite Symphony and Mansfield Philharmonic. When he is not keeping things orderly at Caraway Strings, McIntosh is still creating musical compositions, including an original composition for the world traveling ViolinaBox, which visited Caraway in the spring of 2024.
McIntosh enjoys problem solving for Caraway Strings clients, keeping the shop efficient and the books organized.
Rozie Deloach-Zimmerman is a member of the Violin Society of America, has completed workshops at the distinguished Learning Trade Secrets in instrument repair and making, and has attended several restoration workshops at the world-renowned Oberlin Restoration workshop, learning advanced restoration techniques from some of the best luthiers in the field.
In 2019, Deloach-Zimmerman started the internationally downloaded podcast Omo, The Romance and Reality of Violin Making, alongside several other luthiers in the USA and Canada. The Omo podcast covers a wide variety of topics, interviewing world class makers, covering changes in international law for sourcing bowmaking materials, keeping workers safe from harmful materials in the industry, balancing a traditional field in a modern world, and mental health in a field that can be isolating. Cohosts through the years have included maker Christopher Jacoby, innovative restorer Jerry Lynn, and shop owner Brandon Godman.
In 2024, DeLoach-Zimmerman teamed up with Anya Burgess of SOLA violins to present to the Violin Society of America, Killer Apps: Tech for Easier Workflow in a Violin Shop.
DeLoach-Zimmerman is the principal bow rehairer at Caraway Strings, loves a good setup challenge, and adores finding the perfect soundpost fit.
Caraway Strings is a rare luthier-owned shop in the north Dallas area, operating over 20 years. Rozie DeLoach-Zimmerman named the shop after her family name, to honor her family heritage of both violin playing and running violin shops. In 2003 the shop began mostly as a rental service for beginner students, and grew over time to include fine instrument sales, a full luthier staff capable of all major repairs and restoration, and a local shop for purchasing all things string related.
Offering expertise from the beginner student to the discerning musician, the Caraway Team is proud to match you with services to fit your needs.
